US congressmen ask Biden to support initiatives by Gustavo Petro

US Congressmen sent a letter on Friday to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asking him to support the policies of Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

In addition to supporting ‘total peace’, proposed by the president, they ask Biden make extradition more flexible to favor peace negotiations and to consider the participation of the United States in the dialogues with the National Liberation Army ELN.

The US government “must take advantage of the historic opportunity to advance steps to consolidate peace and advance towards a democracy that provides results for broader and more diverse sectors of the Colombian population,” says the letter signed by a list of 34 legislators, headed by by Representatives James McGovern and Mark Pocan.

Other requests from legislators are related to continuing to support the implementation of the peace agreement and increase aid for Colombia, included in next year’s budget.

The letter also states that the Biden government must “support the objectives of the new government” related to climate change and global warming, migration, the fight against corruption, racial and social inclusion, and the promotion of human rights. .
