US Congressional leaders formally invite Netanyahu to address the House

June 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leaders of both chambers of the United States Congress have formally invited the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, to deliver a speech before the Legislature during a visit to Washington DC, still without a specific date but which would occur before the August recess.

The letter, collected by the Politico news portal, is signed by the leaders of the Democratic and Republican majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives, Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell, by the Republican president of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, and by the leader of the Democratic minority in this lower house, Hakeem Jeffries.

“On behalf of the bipartisan leadership of the United States House of Representatives and Senate, we would like to invite you to address a joint meeting of Congress,” the letter states.

“To continue building our enduring relationship and highlight America’s solidarity with Israel, we invite you to share your vision for the Israeli government to defend democracy, combat terrorism, and establish a just and lasting peace in the region.”

The letter is dated this Friday, the day on which the president of the United States, Joe Biden, has announced a new Israeli peace proposal to end the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip; a three-phase process that contemplates the return of the hostages held by the Palestinian militias, the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave.

Hamas has said it is studying the proposal and will give its response when it deems appropriate.
