US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed on Monday that an American citizen was injured during an attack by the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah on Israeli territory last weekend.
“I can confirm that there was an American citizen who was injured in Israel, but I cannot give any further details of the situation,” Miller added during a press conference in which he assured that he is “monitoring the situation” and “in contact” with the Israeli authorities.
A major rocket attack launched on Sunday by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia against northern Israel, in particular against a military base, left at least four people injured, one of them an American national, and sparked alarm in several communities in the Lower Galilee region.
Hezbollah confirmed the attack in response to the death on Saturday of a senior member of the organization, Maytham Mustafa al Attar, in an Israeli drone attack in the northeastern municipality of Baalbek, one of the militias’ strongholds.
Medical and military sources cited by the Times of Israel reported that three people were injured when an anti-tank guided missile hit a military position in Zarit, including the 31-year-old American civilian, who is in critical condition.
