US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that the situation in Brazil is “unacceptable” after supporters of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro invaded Congress, the presidential palace and the country’s Supreme Court.
Earlier on Sunday, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the US condemns any attempt to undermine democracy in Brazil.
“President Biden is closely monitoring the situation and our support for Brazil’s democratic institutions is unwavering. Brazil’s democracy will not be shaken by violence,” Sullivan said on Twitter.
In its twitter accountSecretary of State Antony Blinken said: “We condemn the attacks on the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court of Brazil today. Using violence to attack democratic institutions is always unacceptable.”
These events occur a week after the inauguration of the left-wing president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva.
In his tweet, Blinken supported Lula’s call, urging “an immediate end to these actions.”
The demonstrators attacked buildings of the three branches of the state, broke windows and looted the headquarters of the Supreme Court, according to the media report.
The news agency AFP reported that Brazilian police used tear gas on Sunday to repel hundreds of supporters of Bolsonaro, who left Brazil for the United States on Friday, December 30, 48 hours before Lula assumed the presidency.
