US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood has called on the UN Security Council to take “additional measures” to hold Iran accountable for violating UN resolutions and carrying out actions that threaten both peace and security in the Middle East.
“A wider war is neither imminent nor inevitable. Opportunistic attacks by Iran and its network of terrorist allies and partners across the region have repeatedly brought us closer to a regional conflict,” he stressed during his turn to speak before the Council.
Wood also called on the international body to support Israel as it defends itself against “repeated attacks” by the Shiite militia party Hezbollah, which could be an “unequivocal message” to the Lebanese group.
“Hezbollah’s attacks have displaced more than 100,000 civilians and no member of this Council should or must tolerate attacks like these,” he said, adding that at this “dangerous moment it is imperative” to work together to reduce tensions.
The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in the region, including the death of the leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in an attack attributed to Israel and carried out in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
