The US State Department applauded this Monday the decision of the Kyrgyz government to repatriate 18 women and 41 children who were in refugee camps in northeastern Syria.
“We are grateful to Kyrgyzstan and our local partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), for working with us to help resolve the ongoing security and humanitarian challenges posed by the Al Hol and Roj camps,” the state spokesperson said. , Ned Price, as can be read in a statement.
Price, who has considered that this is “an important step to resolve” the situation in the aforementioned fields, has asked all countries to follow the example of the Kyrgyz government.
“We urge all governments to follow the example of Kyrgyzstan and repatriate their nationals, especially women and children,” he said, adding that repatriation “is the only lasting solution to this urgent humanitarian and security situation.”
In addition, Price has stressed that “Islamic State continues to be a persistent threat to the region”, while recalling that thousands of people who are in the displacement camps are vulnerable people, including children under 12 years of age, who are more than the half of those in Al Hol and Roj.
Earlier this year, the State Department welcomed the repatriation by Spain of two Spanish women married to jihadists with several minor children in their care, urging the international community to take similar steps.
