The US government announced on Monday two new military aid packages for Ukraine valued at 1.7 billion dollars (1.57 billion euros), which include weapons and other types of equipment that its troops “urgently need” in “their defence against Russian aggression.”
The US Department of Defense said the package includes $1.5 billion in funding for long-term contracts through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, and $200 million in immediate military aid.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken explained that this allocation includes air defense interceptors, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weapons, small arms, demolition equipment and spare parts, auxiliary equipment, training services and transportation. In addition, it “will help strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and reinforce Ukraine’s capabilities on the front lines.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has “deeply thanked US President Joe Biden, Congress, the Democratic and Republican parties, and the American people” for the announcement of both military packages.
“Today, (…) I have witnessed firsthand how this continued assistance allows us to save lives and protect people from Russian attacks. More importantly, this assistance demonstrates America’s strength and leadership in the face of aggression and terror. The stronger that leadership, the more stable the world will be,” he said on his profile on social network X.
