The United States issued new sanctions against Iran on Thursday in response to “the continued nuclear escalation,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

“Over the last month, Iran has announced measures to further expand its nuclear program in a way that has no credible peaceful purpose,” Blinken said.

“We remain committed to never allowing Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, and we are prepared to use every element of national power to ensure that outcome.”

Thursday’s action imposes sanctions on three UAE-based companies that the United States accused of being involved in transporting Iranian oil or petrochemical products, as well as 11 associated vessels.

Earlier this month, the Group of Seven richest countries warned Iran against pursuing its uranium enrichment nuclear program and said it would be prepared to take further measures if Tehran transferred ballistic missiles to Russia.
