US announces new military aid package for Ukraine worth 140 million euros

4 Jul. () –

US State Department Secretary Antony Blinken announced on Wednesday a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $150 million (about 139 million euros) and including weapons, ammunition and other equipment intended to “strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses against Russian attacks and reinforce Ukrainian capabilities across the front.”

“This is the seventh package of security assistance that the president (of the United States, Joe Biden) has authorized to assist Ukraine since signing the national security supplement two months ago. We will deliver this new assistance as quickly as possible to strengthen the defense of Ukraine, its territory, and its people. As President Biden has made clear, the United States and the international coalition we have assembled will continue to support Ukraine,” Blinken said.

Washington will send missiles for the Hawk air defense systems, ammunition for HIMARS rocket launchers, 155- and 105-millimeter artillery shells, 81-millimeter mortar rounds, tube-launched, optically tracked and wire-guided (TOW) missiles, Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, small arms ammunition and grenades, demolition equipment and munitions, tactical vehicles for towing and transporting equipment, tactical air navigation systems and aircraft support equipment, night vision devices, and spare parts, maintenance and other auxiliary and field equipment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked Biden and the US Congress for sending “vital” equipment to strengthen the capabilities of his troops on the front lines. “We count on the continued help of the United States to strengthen Ukraine’s defence and enable us to effectively counter Russian aggression and protect our people from Russian terror,” he said on his profile on the social network X.

The announcement came shortly after a call between Blinken and his Ukrainian counterpart, Dimitro Kuleba, in which they discussed ways to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense against Russian attacks on its energy and civilian infrastructure, which they intend to continue reinforcing in view of the arrival of winter. In addition, the Secretary of State acknowledged Ukraine’s commitment to reforms aimed at achieving “greater Euro-Atlantic integration.”
