The US government has announced that it is willing to provide an amount of 53.7 million dollars in additional assistance to Haiti, which it will distribute through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID, for its acronym in English). That amount of money seeks to help the impoverished nation cope with the humanitarian crisis.
According to a press release, this new assistance will support the most vulnerable Haitians in need of emergency assistance. These people will receive, among others, food assistance.
USAID says that 4.9 million Haitians are in a situation of food insecurity on the Caribbean island.
The assistance will help victims of sexual violence and give the population access to drinking water and medical care, according to official information released.
USAID intends to provide another $10.5 million in development assistance to “improve the resilience and productivity” of Haiti’s agricultural and livestock sector.
Haiti was recently hit by intense flooding in the past week and a mild earthquake in recent days.
Gangs control a large part of Port-au-Prince, the capital, which has considerably increased insecurity.
