US Ambassador to the UN will travel to Costa Rica for the II Summit for Democracy

The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, will lead the delegation of her country that will travel to Costa Rica for the II Summit for Democracy.

The summit, according to a statement, will be based the one held in December 2021and will “highlight how democracies deliver for their citizens and are better equipped to address the world’s most pressing challenges.”

This second summit, which will take place on March 29 and 30, will bring together world leaders virtually, followed by hybrid meetings in each of the co-host countries with representatives from government, civil society and the private sector.

The ambassador will also attend the summit events organized by the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves Robles, “focused on promoting the participation of young people in the democratic process,” the text states.

Likewise, he will deliver an opening speech and meet with young activists and leaders, who seek to “build a safer and fairer world based on democratic values.” The statement indicates that more details of the trip will be given in the coming days.

The Summit, a commitment of the Biden Administration

The Democracy Summit born in december 2021, as part of President Joe Biden’s commitment to strengthen good governance around the world at a time of the rise of autocratic governments. The goals of the summit are to strengthen democracy against authoritarianism, address corruption and promote human rights.

Some have questioned whether the United States has the moral strength to hold the summit.

To this, the Biden Administration has responded that precisely the ability to admit imperfections and confront them transparently is a strength of democracies and that is what the summit wants to demonstrate.

The first Summit for Democracy concluded with the commitment of 110 leaders to return to the table in Washington with inputs to jointly face corruption, curb authoritarianism and reduce the effect of disinformation that proliferates in electoral frameworks.
