The US ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Cindy McCain, visited two departments in southern Guatemala on Tuesday, in order to assess the joint work of her agency with the International Development Fund Agricultural (IFAD).
McCain announced on Monday upon his arrival in the Central American nation his satisfaction with the meeting, aimed at “assisting communities in need in the country,” according to said in a tweet.
The diplomat visited a school in Veguitas village, in Chiquimula, a department in the southeast of the country, where they work with a school feeding program that ensures the nutrition of students, with the support of parents and local farmers, according to what was found the voice of america.
The school feeding program also contributes to the local economy, as small farmers sell 50% of their production to schools in the municipality of Jocotán, Chiquimula, which makes up the “dry corridor” of Guatemala.
The ambassador visited orchards and women’s entrepreneurship programs in the Plan del Jocote sector, Chiquimula, a community made up of more than 700 families.
The UN agencies in Guatemala, FAO and IFAD, develop food, resilience, community development, and entrepreneurship programs in communities in the dry corridor of Guatemala.
