The Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, denounced this Sunday that currently “only” 14 percent of the territory of Gaza is not under “evacuation orders” from the Israeli Army.
“Every few days, the Israeli authorities issue these orders forcing people to flee, creating chaos and panic. Very often, people only have a few hours to gather what they can and start again, mostly on foot or by donkey cart for those who can afford it,” he said.
Lazzarini lamented that “almost all the inhabitants of Gaza have been affected by these orders,” while “many have been forced to flee on average once a month since the war began nine months ago.”
“People are still searching for safety – the most precious thing, the most non-existent. This evacuation tactic only brings more misery, fear and suffering for people who have nothing to do with this war,” he stressed, adding that Gazans are not pieces in a game but people.
For his part, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, explained that earlier this week a team from the agency arrived at Al Shifa hospital in northern Gaza to assess the progress made in restoring emergency care and hemodialysis unit services.
Tedros noted that the hospital lacks specialized personnel, medical supplies and equipment, which is why the WHO and its partners are working to deploy international medical teams and mobilize medical and surgical supplies, as he indicated through his profile on the social network X.
The Israeli army launched an offensive against Gaza in response to the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian militias, which left around 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped. Since then, the Gaza authorities, controlled by the Islamist group, have reported more than 39,300 dead as a result of the Israeli offensive, in addition to more than 590 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
