UNRWA denounces that the Israeli Army has destroyed one of its offices in the West Bank

Israel says the damage was “probably” due to the detonation of explosives by “terrorists” against its soldiers

Nov. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The commissioner general of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, denounced this Thursday that military vehicles of the Israeli Army have “seriously damaged” his office in the Nur Shams refugee camp, in the West Bank, where Israeli troops have been conducting a military operation for the last day in which four Palestinians have been killed.

“The office can no longer be used. It was the center for providing basic services for more than 14,000 Palestinian refugees in the camp, including children’s learning, health, sanitation and social protection. During the operation, they also destroyed roads and water and electricity infrastructure,” he explained.

The head of UNRWA has denounced through a statement published on his social network profile X that “once again, they systematically disregard UN facilities, which must be protected at all times, even in times of conflict.”

For its part, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has denied Lazzarini’s version, ensuring that it is “false”, since “terrorists placed explosives in the vicinity of the UNRWA offices that detonated in an attempt to harm the military.” so “the explosives probably caused damage” to the building.

“The (Israel Defense Forces) IDF are carrying out anti-terrorist operations in the area and have encountered terrorists using civilian infrastructure for terrorist purposes,” the ministerial portfolio added.

This complaint takes place just one day after the Israeli Parliament approved by a large majority a law that prohibits UNRWA activity both in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories, a measure that has received criticism from the international community and has called on the Government that does not apply it due to the consequences for the humanitarian situation of the Palestinian population.
