Lazzarini claims that “many” people do not leave their homes because they know that “nowhere in Gaza is safe”
Oct. 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The commissioner general of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, criticized this Wednesday the new evacuation orders issued by the Israeli Army for Palestinians residing in the north of the Gaza Strip and He has lamented that the situation represents “an endless hell.”
“Northern Gaza. An endless hell. At least 400,000 people are trapped in the area,” recalled Lazzarini, who stressed that “the recent evacuation orders by the Israeli authorities force people to flee again and again.” again, especially from the Yabalia (refugee) camp.
Thus, he stressed that “many” people “refuse” to leave their homes “because they know too well that nowhere in Gaza is safe”, while regretting that shelters and agency services “are being forced to close.” , some for the first time since the start of the war.
Lazzarini has highlighted that the fuel shortage is causing “hunger to spread and deepen again”, before adding that the recent military operation launched by Israel in the area “also threatens the launch of the second phase of the campaign vaccination of children against polio.
“The children are, as always, the first to suffer and the ones who suffer the most. They deserve something much better. They deserve a ceasefire now. They deserve a future,” Lazzarini concluded through a statement published on his account on the social network
The Israeli military issued new evacuation orders on Monday to residents in the north of the enclave, requiring them to go to the designated “humanitarian zone” in the south. After this, the Gazan authorities, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), denounced that the measure affects several hospitals.
The United Nations and numerous non-governmental organizations have in the past criticized the Israeli authorities for the use of these evacuation orders within the framework of the offensive, arguing that they amounted to forced displacement.
Thus, they have stated that these evacuation orders were not followed by the creation of the necessary humanitarian corridors to guarantee the safety of civilians, a situation sometimes worsened by the attacks perpetrated by Israeli troops against these same areas and even the “areas “humanitarian measures” designated by Israel.
The offensive against Gaza was launched after the attacks of October 7, 2023, which left some 1,200 dead and nearly 250 kidnapped, according to Israeli authorities. Since then, nearly 42,000 Palestinians have died, as the Gazan authorities have indicated, to which are added more than 740 Palestinians killed at the hands of Israeli security forces and in attacks carried out by settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since that date. .
