( Spanish) –– Following the government announcement of a new increase in power cuts in Ecuador to 12 hours a day made this Saturday by the Ministry of Energy, a series of reactions of rejection, indignation and discomfort were unleashed among the population and the social and economic sectors of the country.
The president of the Business Committee of Ecuador, María Paz Jervis, indicated that the energy crisis “is devastating for all Ecuadorians without exception” and demanded the delivery of transparent and timely information to better plan the activities of the industrial sector.
The Quito Electric Company schedules 24-hour power cuts for three industrial sectors in the province of Pichincha, which increased the discomfort of the industrial sector.
“Disconnecting the industry for 24 hours would deeply affect the employment and economy of Ecuadorian families. The industry is not just companies: it is people, citizens and lives that depend on its stability,” Jervis warned.
This Saturday and Sunday, after the dissemination of the schedules of the power outages by the service distribution companies, citizens from social networks, businesses and streets reported upset that these blackout schedules are not being met because the outages begin sooner or later, which prevents you from planning your day to day life. Citizens once again questioned the lack of foresight of the Government that took power almost a year ago when the energy situation had worsened.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines, through a releasereported this Sunday that the increase in power outages is based on technical considerations and weather reports. In addition, he asked the electrical service distribution companies to comply with the schedules.
“The Electricity Regulation and Control Agency (Arconel) will carry out the respective verifications, and the distribution companies that are not complying with the established schedules will receive administrative sanctions,” he stated.
The situation of the reservoirs and river flows that feed the most important hydroelectric plants remains critical, according to the National Electricity Operator (Cenace), which recommended an increase in power cuts to avoid a collapse in the national system.
President Daniel Noboa announced this Sunday that his Government Minister, Arturo Félix, would travel to Colombia to carry out a purchase of energywithout specifying details or how it will proceed.
A few days ago the Government of Colombia advertisement that it will not sell energy to Ecuador until conditions in its country improve.
