The United Nations Security Council approved this Friday a resolution that denounces attacks against humanitarian workers and UN personnel and urges to guarantee their safety in the context of active conflicts around the world.
The resolution, which does not refer to any specific conflict, has been approved with 14 votes in favor and one abstention, that of Russia. The Security Council “strongly” condemns the denial of access to these humanitarian workers to war zones, as reported by the UN news channel.
The text, promoted by Switzerland and co-sponsored by more than 90 countries, urges the parties to the conflict to immediately undertake “thorough and impartial investigations into violations perpetrated against humanitarian and UN personnel.”
Likewise, the resolution condemns the disinformation campaigns and incitement to violence against these workers – which “undermines the trust” of the population not only in the United Nations, but also in humanitarian organizations – and has encouraged Member States to take action in this regard.
On the other hand, it requires the parties to the conflict to “immediately” end any indiscriminate use of explosive devices in violation of International Law and to mitigate these dangers effectively, including through their removal.
