The UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, has “strongly” condemned this Thursday “the ambush and brutal murder” of more than 30 civilians in the state of Borno, in the northwest of the country.
“It appears that several people were also injured and others are still missing after the deadly attack allegedly perpetrated by an armed group,” the humanitarian coordinator said, before noting that the victims were fishermen and farmers, as well as internally displaced persons.
Schmale has called on state authorities to investigate this crime “without delay” and has reminded the parties to the conflict to comply with International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.
“This horrific attack is yet another horrifying reminder of the very real threats of violence and insecurity that internally displaced persons and others affected by more than 13 years of non-international armed conflict in the region continue to face daily in their struggle to survive.” has manifested.
