The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has condemned this Thursday the Russian attacks against port facilities in the city of Odesa and other Ukrainian ports on the shores of the Black Sea.
Thus, he has criticized that these offensives contradict the pact agreed between the UN and Russia by which Moscow undertakes to “facilitate the unhindered export of food, sunflower oil and fertilizers from the Black Sea ports controlled by Ukraine”.
“The Secretary General also recalls that the destruction of civilian infrastructure may constitute a violation of International Humanitarian Law,” Guterres’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, remarked in a statement.
Finally, the head of the United Nations has reiterated his commitment to guarantee that food and fertilizers from Ukraine and Russia are available in international markets “as part of their continuous efforts to fight hunger in the world.”
The city of Odessa, located in southwestern Ukraine, has been the scene of Russian offensives in recent days. The attacks have caused deaths and injuries, and have destroyed civilian infrastructure, including seaports.
