MADRID 16 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) denounced this Wednesday that the Israeli Army has carried out a new attack against one of its positions in the south of Lebanese territory, in this case against a surveillance tower near Kafer Kela, a few kilometers from the Israeli city of Metula.
A ‘Merkava’ model battle tank of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has fired at the UNIFIL positions, destroying two surveillance cameras and causing damage to the tower, as detailed by the United Nations international mission in Lebanese territory. in a statement on its website.
“Once again we see direct and apparently deliberate fire against a UNIFIL position,” reads the letter, which reminds the IDF and “all actors” of their obligation to “ensure the protection and security of UN personnel and assets.” and respect the inviolability of United Nations facilities.”
The United Nations mission in Lebanon has already suffered several attacks by the Israeli Army, even confirming several wounded ‘blue helmets’, as well as the incursion of an Israeli tank into one of its bases. The Israeli authorities, for their part, assure that UNIFIL serves as a “human shield” for Hezbollah.
Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah broke out just over a year ago when the militia launched projectiles against Israeli territory in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and after Hamas had attacked Israel, leaving almost 1,200 dead and 240 hostages, which motivated the bloody Israeli response, which totals more than 42,300 deaths in the Gaza Strip and nearly 750 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The Israeli Army unleashed a new invasion of Lebanon on October 1 after nearly a year of clashes on the border, which it describes as a “selective and limited” operation against Hezbollah’s “terrorist targets and infrastructure.” The offensive was launched after nearly two weeks of intensified attacks and has been paralleled by an intensification of bombings against the capital, Beirut, and other areas of the country.
