Today the Intelligent Rail & Logistics Forum 2023 was held in Fényeslitke (Hungary). During the forum, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) announced that it will establish the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Logistics in July. Manufacturing with Huawei and international partners.
This Alliance will commit to building a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing to promote innovation and application of AI technologies in industry and manufacturing and drive the digital economy.
In his speech, Mr. Ciyong Zou, UNIDO’s Deputy Director General and Managing Director, stated: “We are witnessing mobile connectivity and industrial innovation coming together. 5G combined with AI and cloud computing bring many benefits to the transportation and logistics industries. The efficiency and quality of jobs have improved enormously. Site safety has improved. It has increased the participation of women in a work environment that was previously dominated by men.”
As the benefits of AI solutions become increasingly visible across all industries, it is important to help businesses go digital. “The goal of the Alliance is to serve as a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and showcasing best practices,” Zou added.

János Tálosi, Managing Director of East-West Intermodal Logistics Plc, noted: “The East-West Gate (EWG) intermodal terminal began operations in October 2022. One million TEUs can be quickly loaded and unloaded at the terminal every year. (twenty foot equivalent units) between broad gauge and standard gauge railways, which implies high requirements for both efficiency and safety.
This Alliance will commit to building a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing to promote innovation and application of AI technologies in industry and manufacturing and drive the digital economy.
Since 5G enables the interconnection of all internal communications and technical equipment, the terminal’s highly automated cranes can be controlled remotely and are capable of subtle movements. This greatly improves productivity while providing a more comfortable working environment for operators.”
“The project marks a key milestone in the development of 5G technologies in Hungary and the digitization of rail freight transport, and enables EWG to become an intermodal rail logistics hub in the digital age,” added Tálosi.
Radoslaw Kedzia, Vice President of Huawei’s CEE&Nordic region, said: “The East-West Gate intermodal terminal is a story of creating social value with excellent collaboration from different partners and dedicated investors. The digitalized and high-tech solution of the facility attracts many young people from the area. The average age of employees is 23-25 years. Safety is high, there is a healthy and clean environment for the workers, there are no harsh conditions anymore. The solution demonstrates that 5G has really been applied in Europe’s smart rail sector using next-generation digital technologies and solving common problems, promoting digital transformation.”
The Intelligent Rail & Logistics Forum 2023 took place at the East-West Gate (EWG) intermodal terminal in Fényeslitke (Hungary). With an area of 5 million square meters (including terminal, warehouses and development zones), EWG is the largest and most modern inland intermodal terminal of its kind and the first 5G-supported private container rail port in Europe.
