The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has sent some 40 tons of humanitarian aid to the 10,000 children under seven years of age and their families who have been seriously affected by the earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale that took place. on January 7 and left 126 dead in the autonomous region of Tibet, in southwestern China.
The UN agency has indicated that the assistance responds to requests from the governments of the counties of Dingri and Sajia, which have been hit hard by the earthquake, which has also left almost 200 injured and 30,000 displaced. “Those affected are in a mountainous region where night temperatures can drop to 17ºC, making it difficult for vulnerable children to stay warm in temporary shelters, such as tents,” he said.
“When an earthquake hits, children and pregnant women are often among the most vulnerable and have specific needs,” Amakobe Sande, UNICEF representative in China, explained in a statement.
“UNICEF is responding quickly to deliver the supplies needed to meet the needs of children and families facing harsh conditions and support the government’s response effort. We will also support children’s long-term recovery by ensuring that receive the psychosocial support they need to recover,” the text states.
In addition to providing emergency aid, UNICEF will work with local partners to provide long-term psychosocial support to affected children. Thus, he indicated that together with the Chinese Academy of Social Work and under the coordination of the Central Department of Social Work, UNICEF will provide mental health services and psychological support to children and families affected by the earthquake in Tibet.
