Grandi was in Honduras, Colombia and Ecuador, in the latter country he heard initiatives to address the challenges of integrating thousands of refugees and migrants, including a regularization process for refugees and migrants from Venezuela.
“The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are making significant efforts to prevent displacement and offer protection and solutions to millions of people of various nationalities who have been uprooted by conflict, violence and human rights violations,” Grandi added. .
While noting “the commitment and generosity provided” by various countries, he noted that local communities and host countries also need support.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees assured that the best way to prevent further displacement is to “contribute to local economies and mitigate recourse to dangerous subsequent journeys through development, including by facilitating the integration and inclusion of refugees.” refugees and other forcibly displaced persons.
“Helping people who have been forced to flee find stability, security and the means to rebuild their lives is key to addressing these movements.”
