The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has begun to provide aid to the thousands of refugees who have left Sudan due to the fighting that began more than a week ago, especially towards Chad, where at least 10,000 people have already arrived.
The head of UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, has confirmed the start of these works. “We are working closely with partners and host countries to prepare to receive more refugees as fighting in Sudan continues to displace civilians,” he said.
The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has verified displacements in various areas, mainly in the capital, Khartoum, and in the Darfur region. In their attempt to flee the fighting between the Army and the paramilitaries, there have been crossings to neighboring countries such as South Sudan, Libya or Egypt.
However, Chad, a country bordering the Darfur region, is considered the main destination for refugees. Chad was hosting more than 400,000 Sudanese before this crisis and UNHCR estimated last week that between 10,000 and 20,000 crossings would have already taken place, attributed to the recent escalation of violence, which for now shows no sign of a solution.
