UN stresses need for international unity to support political transition process in Libya

September 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo stressed on Monday the need for international unity to support a political process in Libya that would lead to elections in order to conclude the transition process that began after the civil war.

“In discussions with representatives of the international community in Tripoli, I have stressed the need for unity in support of a political process,” DiCarlo said on his X social media account.

During her visit to the African country, the senior UN official met with the Joint Military Commission in a 5+5 format in the city of Benghazi, where she called for strengthening the ceasefire in force in the country and stressed the need to unify all military and security institutions.

DiCarlo also met with representatives of civil society, including women and young people, to whom she highlighted their “important role” as “agents of change” in the country.

Libya is currently divided between two administrations after the House of Representatives terminated Abdul Hamid Dbeibe’s mandate by postponing the presidential elections in December 2021 and appointed Fazi Bashaga to the post, later suspended from office and replaced by Osama Hamad. Dbeibe rejected the decision and chose to remain in office until the elections were held.
