The UN special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, urged calm on Tuesday after the Israeli army carried out a “targeted” attack in the south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, against a senior commander of the Shiite militia party Hezbollah.
“The Special Coordinator stresses once again that there are no military solutions and calls on both Israel and Lebanon to use all diplomatic avenues to try to restore the cessation of hostilities and recommit to implementing resolution 1701 (2006),” she said in a statement, in which she said she was in “close contact” with the parties.
This comes after the Israeli army claimed to have killed a senior commander of the Shiite militia Hezbollah, an ally of Iran, following a “targeted” attack carried out against a headquarters of the group in the south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported that three people have died, including two children, following the attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood. Another 74 have been injured, according to the Lebanese daily L’Orient-Le Jour.
