UN raises civilians killed in Friday attack on Kabul cricket stadium to 19

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has assured that at least 19 people died in the attack perpetrated this past Friday at the Kabul International Cricket Stadium during a match of the Afghan league; This figure is much higher than the 13 wounded declared by the Taliban authorities.

“I strongly condemn Friday’s attack on the Kabul International Cricket Stadium, which has claimed the lives of at least 19 civilians and caused additional casualties,” Guterres said in a statement.

The UN Secretary General recalls in his statement, posted on his Twitter account, that “attacks against civilians are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.”

Similarly, the United Nations mission in the country, UNAMA, has condemned the attack and “extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.”


In fact, the head of UNAMA, Ramiz Alakbarov, was present at the stadium at the time of the attack, which so far has not been claimed by any group, although the involvement of the Afghan affiliate of Islamic State is traditionally suspected, he has condemned ” vigorously” which he has described as a “heinous attack”.

Alakbarov has also sent his condolences to the families of the victims of those affected.

“Today’s explosion is yet another heartbreaking reminder of the terrifying and sudden violence to which the people of Afghanistan continue to be exposed,” Alakbarov said in a press release.
