UN human rights chief urges Singapore to 'speed up' decriminalization of sex between men

Aug. 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has celebrated the announcement of the imminent decriminalization of sexual relations between men in Singapore, but has urged the Government to “accelerate” the process so that this advance in LGTBI rights arrive as soon as possible.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday that he will repeal Law 377A, which punishes relations between men with a prison sentence of up to two years, a colonial-era norm that Bachelet said has contributed to the ” stigma” of the entire LGTBI community.

“Everyone deserves the same protection, respect and fulfillment of their Human Rights,” emphasized the former Chilean president, who trusts that the announcement made on Sunday by the Singapore authorities will give rise to “constructive dialogue” and “acceptance” of all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Singapore’s prime minister, however, has also announced that he will amend the constitution to protect marriage between men and women. Bachelet reminded him on Monday that the UN mechanisms that defend Human Rights are also in favor of legalizing unions between people of the same sex.
