The independent UN commission that examines the situation in the Palestinian Territories has concluded that all countries are “obliged” to “not recognize the territorial or sovereign claims” made by Israel over the areas it currently maintains “occupied” and, in fact , they must work to put an end to it.
“It is up to all States to cooperate to end the illegal occupation and work towards the full realization of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” said the head of this group, Navi Pillay, former head of the Human Rights office of United Nations.
In this sense, he recalled that “state responsibility” falls not only on Israel but on the entire international community, which is why no other country should recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the Israeli State or move embassies to this city, to the extent in which the future of the Holy City is pending.
The Commission, whose mandate dates back to 2021 by order of the UN Human Rights Council, “has always maintained that the underlying cause behind the conflict and cycles of violence is the occupation,” said Pillay, whose analysis highlights doubt also scenarios such as the constantly expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) already declared the illegality of the occupation in July, a “historic” milestone that Pillay celebrated this Friday as it is the main UN court, where a complaint for the alleged commission of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
