Pro-Russian authorities in four regions of eastern Ukraine reported holding local referendums on self-determination to join the Russian Federation. The announcement has the full support of Moscow, while the European Union, Ukraine, NATO and the United States have said they will not recognize the results and advocate maintaining and guaranteeing Ukraine’s territorial integrity. In this edition of El Debate we analyze the recent events of the war in Ukraine.
Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporizhia and Donetsk are the four regions that announced a referendum to join Russia. If these regions are brought into the Federation, the Kremlin would have full control of the coastlines on the Sea of Azov and would allow Moscow to have a land corridor to the Crimean peninsula, which was controversially annexed in 2014. Ukraine one of the most industrialized and economically important areas for the country.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the mobilization of some 300,000 reservists who will be taken to the borders with Ukraine as part of his special military operation. Putin also again mentioned that he will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to protect Russian territory.
Also highlighted this week was the advance of the Ukrainian troops, who have regained ground in the Kharkiv region and different areas of the east, to the point of putting Russian citizens on the other side of the border on alert, who for the first time saw a possibility the entry of the Ukrainian armed forces into Russia.
