Aug. 3 () –

The Ukrainian Army General Staff announced on Saturday that it had sunk the Russian submarine Rostov-on-Don during an attack on the port of Sevastopol in Russia-controlled Crimea.

The Rostov-on-Don is a Kilo-class attack submarine that, according to the General Staff, had been undergoing repairs after being hit in a previous attack in September last year.

The submarine, part of the Black Sea Fleet, has been repaired and is undergoing navigation tests in the Crimean port, the General Staff said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

“The destruction of the Rostov-on-Don once again demonstrates that there is no safe place for the Russian fleet in Ukrainian territorial waters in the Black Sea,” the General Staff concluded.

The Russian military has not yet commented on the incident.
