The head of the General Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, Kirilo Budanov, has assured that the mercenaries of the Wagner Group are still present in the east of the country, although they are not participating in the hostilities.
As Budanov has highlighted, the mercenaries are staying in Lugansk in their own existing base “since 2014”, when Russia took the Donbas regions -Donetsk and the aforementioned Lugansk- by force, reports the Ukrainian newspaper ‘Pravda’.
“They are also in some areas of southern Ukraine, but do not take part in hostilities,” added the head of Ukrainian intelligence.
The Wagner Group, led by Yevgeni Prigozhin, rebelled against the Russian authorities last weekend. After this, Moscow has chosen to dispense with their services in the war in Ukraine, although they will continue to be hired in Africa.
