Ukraine uncovers a plot of “large-scale corruption” in its Supreme Court

May 16. (EUROPE PRESS) –

In Ukraine’s Supreme Court, the country’s investigators have uncovered a “large-scale corruption” network involving bribery of several of its judges.

The National Anti-Corruption Office (NABU) has reported that several Supreme Court magistrates received “illegal benefits” for the performance of their activities, which is why they are carrying out an “emergency investigation”, as they have explained through a statement, without giving further details of the case.

It is one of the anti-corruption operations that have been carried out throughout the country in recent months, in an effort by the Ukrainian government to comply with the demands of the European Union, which in 2022 asked the president, Volodimir Zelenski, to comply with a series of conditions in this area to be eligible for the status of candidate country.

Ukraine has a corruption problem in many areas of its institutions, and according to the 2021 Transparency International list, it was ranked 122 out of a total of 180 countries.

In March, the Ministry of Defense approved the creation of a new Corruption Prevention department to deal with these cases, which in recent months have led to several dismissals and the opening of dozens of new investigations.
