Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Wednesday that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive nearly half a million 155-millimeter artillery shells before the end of the year thanks to an initiative launched by Prague to alleviate supply needs on the battlefield.
Fiala has given an interview to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform in which he has confirmed these future deliveries and has stressed that, for the moment, the supply of ammunition to Ukraine is taking place “at the planned pace.”
“It is important to note that the assistance does not end there. Currently, fifteen countries are directly involved in the Czech initiative on ammunition, and we believe and do everything possible to ensure that other countries join, and that the current countries continue their support next year,” he said.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure the long-term security of all citizens. State security forces and special services are focused on countering hybrid threats,” said Fiala, who says he is aware that Europe has been facing such threats for a “long time.”
Prague’s aim is to collect up to 800,000 shells. According to the Czech authorities, the programme already has several partners – including several from the EU, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Lithuania – who had pledged 1.6 billion euros in aid by the end of June.
