MADRID Jan. 2 () –
The Ukrainian authorities have assessed 2024 as the most difficult year for the country’s electrical grid and systems due to the constant attacks by Russian forces and have highlighted the “enormous merit” that it continues to function despite everything.
The Minister of Energy, Herman Galushchenko, has assured that “the fact that the electrical system is currently maintained is a consequence of the “enormous merit of each engineer” who works “with his own hands” to make this happen.
“Workers in the energy sector work twenty-four hours a day,” he highlighted in an interview for Ukrainian television, according to the press service of the ministry he directs.
Galushchenko explained that although Ukrainian energy infrastructures have been suffering from Russian attacks since October 2022, this year’s attacks, which began in March, have been of such magnitude that 2024 is already the worst since the start of the crisis. war.
“The destruction has been very great, much greater, compared to years ago. The very nature of the attacks, the weapons used have changed. Therefore, this is ultimately the most difficult year for the energy system,” he said.
Galushchenko highlighted that during 2024, Russian forces have been using a greater number of drones every night. In total, during this year, Russia has carried out thirteen massive attacks against the Ukrainian energy industry.
Likewise, the intensity of these bombings has led to the largest campaign in years to recover and rehabilitate these facilities through, mainly, the financial aid provided by kyiv’s international partners.
