The Ukrainian government has extended a formal invitation to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to carry out humanitarian work in Ukrainian-controlled areas of Russia’s Kursk region, the scene of an unprecedented incursion since early August.
“From the first day, the Ukrainian Defence Forces have demonstrated their full adherence to international humanitarian law,” Foreign Minister Andri Sibiga said on social media, adding that the Ukrainian military “guarantees humanitarian assistance and the safe movement of civilians.”
kyiv claims that its troops already control more than 100 towns in Russian territory, although there are no impartial observers on the ground. Moscow, for its part, claims that it has the situation under control and on Monday the Ministry of Defence raised the number of casualties – dead and wounded – suffered by Ukrainian forces to 13,800.
The ministry also said that Russian forces had taken control of two towns, Uspenovka and Borki, and had repelled five Ukrainian counterattacks.
