The Government of Ukraine has criticized the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, for agreeing to meet this week with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, after in June he ruled out attending the peace conference held in Switzerland and to which they did attend. other international leaders.
“Instead, (now) he accepts the invitation to Kazan from the war criminal Putin,” lamented the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, in a message published on social networks and in which it lamented the “wrong choice” of Guterres, who ” does not advance the cause of peace.”
The Ministry has indicated that this meeting “only damages the reputation of the UN”, on the eve of what will be the first meeting in Russia between Guterres and Putin since the Russian military invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
According to the Kremlin, Putin and Guterres will talk about different current international issues, including the war in Ukraine and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The secretary general’s office, however, avoided confirming or denying this meeting in a press conference held on Monday.
