The Ukrainian State Border Service announced this Wednesday that it has confiscated a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship that was detained last July in the port city of Odessa, in southern Ukraine, for “illegal entry” into the ports of Crimea. .
“The Cameroon-flagged ‘USKO MFU’ that illegally entered the ports of temporarily occupied Crimea to carry out commercial activities was detained in Odessa in July. Currently, according to the court’s decision, the ship has become the property of the State of Ukraine,” reads a statement published on its Telegram channel.
The captain of the ship, an Azeri citizen, is accused of “violating the procedure for entering the occupied territories with the aim of harming state interests, because any operation in the ports of Crimea or in the Sea of Azov violates international standards and Ukrainian legislation”.
The Ukrainian authorities reported when the ship was detained that, according to the investigation, between 2023 and 2024 the ship repeatedly docked in the port of Sevastopol and loaded thousands of tons of agricultural products destined for a Turkish company.
“To hide illegal activities, before the ship entered the port of Sevastopol, it deactivated the automatic identification system, which constitutes a serious violation of maritime security requirements,” said the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. which since the Russian annexation has had its headquarters in the Ukrainian capital, kyiv.
