Ukraine carries out drills to contain a possible radiation leak from the Zaporizhia power plant

The Ukrainian authorities have launched simulation exercises of the reaction to a radiation leak in three provinces of the country near the nuclear power plant of Zaporizhiaoccupied by Russia, given the risk denounced by kyiv of a Russian sabotage in the infrastructure.

“We are working on all possible scenarios, for example, that the radioactive cloud goes further, to any region of our country,” declared the Minister of the Interior, Igor Klimenko.

The exercises take place in the provinces of Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson and include vehicle radioactivity measurements and population evacuation measures.

In the simulation exercises, some 8,000 people including local authorities, law enforcement, volunteers, doctors and other public officials. More than 350 special vehicles and 400 buses to evacuate the population have been mobilized for the maneuvers.

The Ukrainian presidency, military intelligence and government have warned that Russia would be preparing a “terrorist act” at the Zaporizhia plant that would consist of causing a radiation leak. kyiv assures that Russia has planted mines in the reactors.

Last week, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossimet in the Russian city of Kaliningrad with the head of the Russian corporation for atomic energy (Rosatom), Alexei Likhachov.

Grossi’s consultations are part of the IAEA’s efforts to protect Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. In this sense, the director of the aforementioned organization remarked that the situation remained “stable.”

Ukrainian air defenses shot down 10 of the 13 Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones launched by Russia last morning, the Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement on Friday. Russia also launched four S-300 guided anti-aircraft missiles against Ukraine last night.

The target of the attack was military and other infrastructures in the Zaporizhia region. According to the Air Force, which cites the regional military administrations, there have been no casualties.
