Ukraine and Japan close an agreement on security and cooperation for the next ten years

June 13. () –

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, signed this Thursday an agreement on security and bilateral cooperation for the next ten years, and under which Tokyo undertakes to supply some 4.5 billion dollars (just under 4.2 billion euros) this year.

With this agreement – the first that Ukraine signs with a power outside NATO and a Pacific country – Japan commits to millions of dollars in financing for Ukraine, which from 2022 until the end of the pact is estimated to receive up to 12,000 million dollars (more than 11,100 million euros).

“The document sets out the main directions of Japan’s long-term support in the field of security and defense, humanitarian aid, recovery and reconstruction,” reads a letter released by the Ukrainian Presidency. Zelensky and Kishida signed the agreement on the sidelines of the G-7 summit.

Likewise, the pact includes the delivery of Japanese “non-lethal equipment” to Ukraine – “taking into account Japan’s constitutional restrictions” – and calls for further development of cooperation with Ukraine in those international organizations of which Tokyo is part.

As part of its cooperation with Ukraine, Japan is committed to providing medical treatment to wounded Ukrainian soldiers, collaborating in the field of Intelligence and protection of confidential information, strengthening the protection and reconstruction of infrastructure, and promoting cybersecurity.

Likewise, the Japanese side is committed to continuing to support the peace formula proposed by kyiv, strengthening sanctions against Russia in response to its offensive against Ukraine and cooperating in the development of a damage repair mechanism at the expense of Russian sovereign assets.

With this latest alliance with Japan, Ukraine has already signed bilateral agreements with 16 countries: the United Kingdom, Germany; France, Denmark, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Sweden, Iceland and Norway.
