MADRID Jan. 14 () –
The Secretary of State for the Treasury of the United Kingdom, Tulip Siddiq, presented her resignation this Tuesday due to pressure from an anti-corruption investigation in Bangladesh that places her as a beneficiary of a plot linked to the Awami League, the party of her aunt and former Prime Minister of that country, Sheikh Hasina.
Although Siddiq has always defended his innocence before the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, he has decided to present his resignation to prevent this whole matter from becoming a “distraction” that affects the work of the Government.
Siddiq has made this decision after consulting with Starmer’s ministerial affairs advisor, Laurie Magnus, who, despite not having found violations of internal rules, regretted that she had not been more aware “of the potential risks” of this type of family relationships.
Thus, Magnus has advised Siddiq to “reconsider” his responsibilities and his role in Starmer’s cabinet in light of what happened.
Siddiq, who had already been questioned for the use she has made of some of the properties in London linked to her aunt’s allies, will be replaced by Emma Reynolds, according to the BBC.
For his part, the British Prime Minister has stated that he has had to accept the resignation “with sadness”, but that he continues to have “the door open” to the government in the future. Likewise, he highlighted that Magnus has informed him that “he has not found any infringement.”
The Awami League has been one of the main parties blamed for the political crisis that occurred during the second half of 2024 in Bangladesh, when student protests led to real massacres committed by the security forces and supporters of this party. Hasina fled to India on August 5, coinciding with one of the bloodiest days of the protests.
