UK to use Crown land offshore to build wind farms

Jul 25. () –

State-owned energy company Great British Energy, promoted by the new Labour government of Keir Starmer, announced on Thursday that it will use Crown lands to build wind farms in order to fulfil one of the new prime minister’s promises to make the country more self-sufficient in energy.

The aim of the deal is to boost renewable energy projects, boosted by £8.3bn (just under €10bn) in state funding through an extraordinary tax on major oil and gas companies, according to the BBC.

The Crown Estate, the body responsible for managing the British royal family’s property and land, will lease these maritime territories to develop and build wind farms. The Crown Estate owns most of the seabed, which extends up to twelve nautical miles from the mainland.

Energy Minister Ed Miliband said the project would result in British households facing “lower bills”. “As renewable energy projects come online, we will start to see the effect on bills,” he said.

However, the Conservatives have warned that the creation of the state energy company is nothing more than a “trick that will end up costing families money” and have pointed out that this initiative represents a “financial black hole”.
