UK sanctions two companies and five ships linked to Russian energy sector

September 26 () –

British authorities announced Thursday that they had imposed sanctions against two companies and five vessels linked to the Russian energy sector, measures that are part of the restrictions imposed by the country in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The government, which has indicated that the list of sanctions has been updated, has explained that the target of these sanctions is primarily the companies Ocean Speedstar Solutions OPC and White Fox Ship Management FZCO, both related to the Russian liquefied natural gas industry.

The vessels Asya Energy, Pioneer, North Sky, Nova Energy and SCF La Perouse will also be subject to restrictions for “their participation in activities aimed at destabilizing Ukraine, sabotage or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty or independence of Ukraine,” the government said in a statement.

For London, Russian liquefied natural gas represents “an important source of financing for (Vladimir) Putin.” “Russia intends to increase its profits through its energy sector,” it warned, before stressing that these measures are taken “in accordance with those adopted by the partners and allies” of the United Kingdom.

This is the first time the country has used a specific mechanism to impose sanctions against vessels of this type, although earlier this year the government sanctioned the Russian project Arctic LNG 2 – a mega project for liquefied natural gas in the Arctic – which has led Moscow to cut production.

“The UK has already sanctioned 15 vessels and entities involved in the Russian liquefied natural gas sector and will continue to exert pressure against this important source of Putin’s funding,” he concluded.
