UK confirms 'tactical advances' by Russian troops around Vuhledar, Ukraine

Russia announces the capture of another town in Donetsk province amid its advances in the province

September 7 () –

British intelligence services confirmed on Saturday that Russian troops had made “increasing tactical progress” around the Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, in the eastern province of Donetsk.

“In August 2024, Russian forces made advances east and west of Vuhledar, taking control of the nearby towns of Prechistivka and threatening Vodiane,” they said, adding that Moscow is “likely” to continue trying to make further advances in the area this month.

“Vuhledar has long been a target of Russian forces and has acted as a springboard against Russian advances in southern Donetsk,” they said, adding that Russia has made “repeated attempts” to storm the city, “suffering heavy losses but gaining little ground.”

For their part, the Russian authorities announced this Saturday the capture of the town of Kalinovo, in Donetsk, as part of the advances made by their forces in this area of the country within the framework of the large-scale invasion unleashed in February 2022.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement posted on its Telegram account that “the town of Kalinovo in the Donetsk People’s Republic has been liberated as a result of active operations by units of the Center of Forces group.”

Donetsk, along with Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia, all partially occupied during the invasion – and Donetsk and Luhansk the centre of a conflict with the Ukrainian army since 2014 – were annexed by Russia in October 2022, a measure not recognised by the international community that followed Moscow’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
