British military intelligence has confirmed a significant advance by Russian forces towards the Ukrainian town of Pokrovosk, a key strategic centre on the eastern front of the war.
Russian infantry is now “only ten kilometres from the outskirts of the city”, according to the latest assessment by the British Ministry of Defence, which nevertheless anticipates a slowdown in the advance in the coming days as the Russians encounter the Ukrainian defences surrounding the city.
Pokrovsk, London recalled in its report on Sunday, is a “key logistics centre” for the Donetsk region, already partially occupied by Russia, and if Russian forces take control of it, Ukraine would have no choice but to “divert and lengthen its supply lines”.
As an immediate consequence, the Ukrainian Armed Forces “would find it more difficult to resupply and transport resources between other key strongholds such as the towns of Chasiv Yar and Vulhedar.”
The British Ministry of Defence also said that the pace of military activity on the other front lines in the east of the country, as well as in the south, “remains slow” and there have been “no significant changes” in terms of territorial control.
