Uganda confirms shelling of ADF 'big terrorist camp' in eastern DRC

Museveni stresses that the attack was carried out “with permission” from the Congolese government and speaks of a “deserved reward”

Nov. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ugandan Armed Forces have carried out bombings in recent days against a “large terrorist camp” of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) group, which swore allegiance to the Islamic State, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed.

Museveni pointed out in a statement published on his website that the attack was carried out on Friday “with the permission of the DRC government” and stressed that “it is important that Africans and the population of East Africa know the capacity that Africa has to help solve these chronic security issues.

“This location is beyond the exploitation limit agreed with the Congolese government,” he explained, referring to the agreement reached between Kampala and Kinshasa to carry out joint operations against the ADF in the face of the uptick in the group’s attacks in recent months. .

Thus, he stressed that in the area of joint operations “all the camps identified by the reconnaissance work have been destroyed, killing many terrorists and capturing others, as well as freeing the terrified population of the area.”

“For all this, we have worked with our brother Congolese Army. That is why the enemy, desperate, has fled beyond the limit of exploitation. The ignorant terrorists do not know that in minutes, not hours, we can reach them with deadly fire in many areas. beyond the limit line,” argued Museveni.

The Ugandan president has emphasized that the ADF “received their well-deserved reward” and has promised to work with Kinshasa to continue these operations. “Congratulations to the Army of Uganda and congratulations to the Government and the Army of the DRC”, he has riveted.

The governments of the DRC and Uganda signed an agreement in December 2021 on defense and security for these operations in the Congolese provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, after the Islamic State in Central Africa (ISCA) – to which the ADF swore loyalty– claimed a series of bombings in Uganda.

The ADF, a Ugandan group created in the 1990s, especially active in eastern DRC and accused of the killing of hundreds of civilians in this area of the country, could be trying to operate again in Uganda, from where it withdrew in 2003. after a series of military operations that drastically reduced its ability to carry out attacks in the country.

The ADF suffered a split in 2019 after Musa Baluku — sanctioned by the United Nations and the United States — swore allegiance to ISCA, under whose banner he has been operating ever since. Baluku succeeded Jamil Mukulu as leader of the group after his arrest in 2015 in Tanzania.
