The Japan Meteorological Agency reported early Thursday morning that Typhoon Shanshan had made landfall in Kagoshima Prefecture, at the southern tip of the main island of the Japanese archipelago, Kyushu, causing torrential rains.
The typhoon, which made landfall at 8 a.m. local time, has brought heavy rain and winds that could destroy some homes, prompting the agency to issue a special alert for most of the prefecture, while public transport operators have cancelled trains and flights.
Local governments in Kagoshima and neighbouring Miyazaki have reported that at least nine people have been injured so far as a result of the typhoon, the Kyodo news agency reported.
In some areas, up to 600 millimetres of rain are expected in 24 hours. The slow-moving nature of the storm could increase the danger as strong winds and torrential rain continue for prolonged periods.
