Typhoon Shanshan disrupts rail links in Japan as it continues westward

Aug. 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Typhoon Shanshan is continuing its path through central Japan, heading towards the west coast, leaving behind disruptions to all rail services and torrential rains, with subsequent flooding, which has already left three dead and 80 injured.

Travel between the capital Tokyo and central Japan’s largest city Nagoya has been partially suspended, with further disruptions expected on Sunday, Kyodo news agency reported.

The typhoon is on track to make landfall on the Kii Peninsula in the west of the country at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour and winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, according to the latest assessment by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Record rainfall of more than 400 millimeters in 48 hours was recorded in parts of the Tokai, Kanto and Kyushu regions.

Major airlines All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, among others, have announced the cancellation of dozens of flights this Saturday and could repeat the decision this coming Sunday, depending on how events develop.
