( Spanish) — An American woman and a initially unidentified man were found dead Tuesday in a hotel room in Mexico, authorities said.
On Wednesday, the US State Department confirmed that the man was also identified as a US citizen.
The State Attorney General’s Office reported through a statement that two people were found dead in a hotel in the Pescadero community, in the Todos Santos district of Baja California Sur, as a result of intoxication with a substance that has yet to be found. be determined.
The Attorney General’s Office added that one of the deceased is a 22-year-old woman of United States nationality. There is still no data on the identity of the second dead person beyond her nationality. The authorities do not specify in the statement if the two people found were a sentimental couple or not.
They were discovered in the Mexican tourist town of El Pescadero, in the state of Baja California Sur, according to a statement from the state attorney general’s office.
The autopsy determined that the cause of death was poisoning “by a substance to be determined without traces of violence in the body,” the prosecution said.
When found, the couple had been dead for approximately 10 to 11 hours, according to authorities.
The US State Department said it is “closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death.” The FBI, for its part, is not involved in the investigation, a US law enforcement source familiar with the incident told .
Henar Gil, general manager of Rancho Pescadero, said they are “heartbroken,” but added that they are unaware of any threats to guests and are working with authorities to carry out their investigation.
