At least two people have died in a fire at a camp for internally displaced persons in the province of Tanganyika, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), local authorities have confirmed, although the cause of the incident is not yet known.
The authorities in the municipality of Kalemie have indicated that the fire took place in the Katanika camp, where all the straw houses built to accommodate the displaced have been destroyed, as indicated by a representative of civil society.
Nathan Mugisho said the displaced had fled due to flooding in recent weeks and inter-community conflicts in the area. “The displaced have lost all their belongings. No one could save their belongings as the houses were made of straw,” he said.
